AdvancED team recommends accreditation for Worland schools

WORLAND — Washakie County School Dist. No. 1 schools are performing above average according to an AdvancED report. Officials from AdvancED visited schools in the school district throughout the week. The review culminated Thursday with a public meeting at the Worland Middle School Auditorium.

During the survey, officials with AdvancED spoke with 80 teachers, 138 students, 46 support staff and 23 parents and members of the Worland community.

“We see a culture of improvement throughout the school district,” Steve Epperson told school officials and community members Thursday. Epperson was the lead surveyor for the district-wide review.

The school district performed exceptionally well in the index of education quality; that is, a score that looks at impact of teaching and learning, capacity of leadership and utilization of resources, among other criteria.

WCSD No. 1 has an index of education quality of 318.22. The national average is 278.34.

“You ought to be extraordinarily proud. This is one of the best school districts I have visited. It’s (accreditation recommendation) earned not given.

“This is better than acceptable,” Epperson said.

In order to earn and maintain accreditation, schools must meet the AdvancED Standards for Quality, engage in a process of continuous improvement and host an external review at least once every five years.

At the conclusion of the half-hour meeting, WCSD No. 1 School board Chairman Don Bryant thanked employees throughout the school district for maintaining its AdvancED accreditation.

“You’ve shown how much pride this district has,” Bryant said.

WCSD No. 1 Superintendent David Nicholas also expressed gratitude for the district’s performance.

“Lots and lots of work went into this,” Nicholas said.

According to its website, AdvancED is the largest community of education professionals in the world that conducts rigorous, on-site external reviews of PreK – 12 schools and school systems to ensure that all learners realize their full potential.

The group which reviewed the school district consisted of superintendents and school administrators throughout the country.
