Karla's Kolumn Much to celebrate

March 19, 2016

What an exciting time in Worland. There is much to celebrate.

We started off the month with a state championship high jumper in indoor track, after last month having some state championship wrestlers. Then came this past weekend. And what a weekend it was … an historical weekend.

The Worland Lady Warriors basketball team won the first ever girls basketball state championship for the school. A job well done in a hard-fought state title game.

The Warriors, just hours before, won the school’s third boys basketball state championship, the first since 1921, 95 years ago. And Worland’s own Hoyt Nicholas became Worland’s second athlete to win Wyoming Gatorade Player of the Year and the first basketball player to win that sports honor.

But it’s not just sports where we get to celebrate. The speech team boasted a strong third-place finish with four state champions.

Thursday night at the Worland-Ten Sleep Chamber of Commerce banquet volunteer Meg Stark was honored as the Volunteer of the Year by the Chamber Ambassadors. Stark is involved with numerous organizations in the community — hospital auxiliary, crisis prevention and Gorgeous Gals.

I appreciate everyone who volunteers their time and effort to make the community a better place. I appreciate Stark’s willingness to take the time and effort to give back to her community through a variety of organizations.

The Banner Health Washakie Medical Center was honored by the Chamber as the Business of the Year. The award is quite an honor as the business is nominated and voted on by their peers, other businesses in the community.

The hospital and the county is investing in the future with the $23.4 million construction project. Just this week, Banner Health announced it would provide $1 million in equipment in order to help out with the $1 million shortfall in the construction budget.

It’s great to see a company and an organization investing in the community and ensuring that area residents are provided quality health care for years to come.

And I would be remiss if I didn’t mention for us Broncos fans, that the celebration here started early last month when Denver won Super Bowl 50. There has indeed been much to celebrate in our community.

Congratulations to all. I’m sure we’ll have more to celebrate as the year goes along.
