Worland senior Bailey Gibbons (center) and junior Saige Jones reach for a block on a spike by an opponent from Central during the Border Wars volleyball tournament Saturday at Sweitzer Gym in Cody.

CODY -Worland High School volleyball team played four matches totaling 13 games and only dropped one game of those 13 during the Border Wars tournament in Cody on Friday and Saturday.

The Lady Warriors beat Glendive 25-14, 25-12, 25-14; Sidney 3-0, 25-12, 25-18, 26-24, Billings Central 3-1, 22-25, 25-18, 28-26, 25-14; and Laurel 25-12, 25-13, 25-12 to win the Border Wars tournament.

Billings Central was the toughest opponent and the only team to take a game from Worland. In game three the Lady Warriors were at one point down 17-5 but rallied back to win the game 28-26 and won the match in the next game.

WHS volleyball coach Brittany Miller was thrilled with her team's performance against Central. "Central is a very good team so I was really proud how we bounced back. It was crazy winning game three after being down 17-5," said coach Miller. "They showed a lot of character in that match most teams would try to get momentum for game four but I don't know they would have put the pedal to the metal like this group did. During our timeout we said let's just go win this and they did it. It showed the type of character this team has and I was really proud of them."

While there are things to work on, overall for the tournament coach Miller was impressed with her team's play. "At the beginning of the season you're out of system a lot and serve/receive passing isn't the best. And watching the other teams their chemistry isn't there yet. But with this group whenever we're out of system they talk and rally. You can tell they worked really hard this summer and played a lot of volleyball, said coach Miller.

"Our overall serve/receive passing wasn't where we wanted it to be and a lot of times you lose if that's the case. But our serving was excellent, we served at 93 percent and addition to that we had 36 aces. So our serving game really helped compensate where we were weak to get points, said coach Miller."

This weekend the Lady Warriors will travel to Rawlins for the Rawlins Invite. To coach Miller the Invite will serve as the team's toughest slate of matches in the early season. "3A is going to be tough this year and all the teams will be down there in Rawlins," said coach Miller. "We definitely have our toughest weekend ahead of us. Star Valley has started the season rock solid, along with some other teams as well. So it's going to be a battle of the 3As down there. Overall it's going to benefit us as a team because it will show us where we are and where we need to go."
