WORLAND — A Worland man was shot and injured during an altercation with Washakie County law enforcement officers late Sunday evening in Worland, at approximately 11:03 p.m., at a residence on Obie Sue Avenue.

According to a preliminary investigation, with information provided by the Washakie County Attorney’s Office, members of the Worland Police Department and Washakie County Sheriff’s Office responded to a disturbance call at approximately 11 p.m.

After family members informed the officers that the suspect was inside the residence, officers entered the house and were immediately engaged by a man with a baseball bat. One officer was struck in the head and was knocked unconscious.

The man then attacked a second officer who was able to fire a duty sidearm at the suspect, hitting him in the abdomen. The suspect continued to attack the officer with the bat after he was shot, according to the release.  The officer was able to control the suspect to the ground and apprehend him.

Both officers were treated and released from Washakie Medical Center in Worland and are currently on paid administrative leave.

The suspect was transported to Washakie Medical Center and was later flown to Billings in critical condition.

Law enforcement officials have not released the name of the suspect or the officers involved.

The case is still under investigation with assistance from the Wyoming Division of Criminal Investigation, which is standard procedure in such cases.

More information will be released when it is available.
