Kris Sheaff Memorial Volleyball tournament set for Saturday

WORLAND — If you’re looking for a way to solve that competitive itch and have fun while taking part of a good cause, the annual Kris Sheaff Memorial Volleyball tournament is where you need to be at 8 a.m. this Saturday at Kiwanis Park.

This will be the eighth year that organizers Matt and Barney Schneider will head the tournament that honors the late Kris Sheaff, a former Lady Warrior volleyball standout who was an all-stater and on the 1987 state championship team.

The tournament is open to players aged 12 or older, as long as liability waivers are signed prior to play. There will be a $75 fee per team with team rosters being capped at six players. Registration forms can be picked up at Security State Bank and the deadline for registration will be at 5 p.m. Friday.

One hundred percent of the proceeds raised from the tournament go to a scholarship fund that is then rewarded on behalf of the Sheaff family to a standout senior Lady Warrior volleyball player from the previous season.

This year the Sheaff family will hand out two scholarships, which is a break from the usual one player, prior to the start of the tournament Saturday morning.

Around $3,500 in scholarships have been awarded over the past seven years, which is the exact mission of the tournament.

“Our sole purpose is to get funds and raise as much as we can for those scholarships,” said Matt Schneider.

The first 50 participants to register will receive a Kris Scheaff Volleyball Tournament T-shirt, which is typically rewarded to the first and second place teams.
