June Fire 70 percent contained

July 27, 2017

CODY — Precipitation fell over the June Fire Tuesday with more expected over the next couple days.

Ahead of the rain, crews completed containment line along the northern perimeter of the fire and worked to suppress small spot fires in the northeastern corner. There are areas on the fire that continue to hold heat in the heavier concentrations of vegetation with smoldering and creeping fire behavior, according to a press release. Sparse vegetation and other natural barriers continue to limit the fires growth to the south.

Due to the reduction in fire activity, firefighting resources were continuing to be released Wednesday.

The June Fire has burned 1,618 acres and is 70 percent contained. The decrease in acreage reflects better mapping. The cause of the June fire is under investigation.

The Shoshone National Forest announced Wednesday that the area closure associated with the June Fire has been lifted. Elk Fork Trail and Blackwater Trail are officially open.

Elk Fork Campground is also open.
