Incumbents file for county seats

WORLAND – Filing for state and local offices began last Thursday and runs through next Friday, June 1, for a variety of offices on the primary ballot, scheduled for voting on Aug. 21.

Applicants for state offices must register through the Office of the Secretary of State, while county positions will register with the county clerk. City and municipal positions will register with the city or town clerk.


As of Monday, there were no filings for Worland City offices, while the county had nine filings, all from incumbents.

County Clerk Mary Grace Strauch, County Attorney John Worrall, Sheriff Steve Rakness, Clerk of Court Suzann Whitlock, Commissioners Fred Frandson and Terry Wolf, Treasurer Doris Kern, Assessor Kathy Treanor and Coroner Jeff Lapp all re-filed to hold their current offices.

For national offices, John Holtz (R) of Laramie has filed for U.S. Senator, Rod Miller (R) of Cheyenne for House of Representatives.

Filings for governor include Bill Dahlin of Sheridan, Foster Friess of Jackson, and Harriet Hageman of Cheyenne, all Republicans. Kenneth Casner of Elk Mountain is the only Democrat to file so far.


Democrat James Byrd of Cheyenne has filed for secretary of state, while Democrat Jeff Dockter of Cheyenne has filed for state auditor.

Republican Curt Meier is the only filing so far for state treasurer.

State Representative Mike Greear (R) of Worland has filed to re-run for his seat in District 27.

In District 28, Tim Morrison (R) of Meeteetse has filed for the seat currently held by Rep. Nathan Winters. Winters, of Thermopolis, is running for state auditor. No one has filed for District 26, the seat currently held by Jamie Flitner of Greybull.


A $25 filing fee applies to all offices, and those filing for office must be a Wyoming resident and registered voter. Due to state law, those seeking office must register as either Republican or Democrat to be eligible for the primary. The general election will be held Nov. 6.

Partisan offices to be nominated at the primary election include:

One U.S. Senator (six-year term), currently held by John Barrasso.

One U.S. Representative (two-year term), currently held by Elizabeth Cheney.

One Governor (four-year term), currently held by Matt Mead, ineligible for reelection due to term limits.


One Secretary of State (four-year term), currently held by Edward Buchanan.

One State Auditor (four-year term), currently held by Cynthia Cloud.

One State Treasurer (four-year term), currently being held by Mark Gordon, who has expressed a bid for governor.

One State Superintendent of Public Instruction (four-year term), currently held by Jillian Balow.

One State Representative, House District 27 (two-year term), currently held by Mike Greear.

Two Washakie County Commissioners (four-year terms), currently held by Terry Wolf and Fred Frandson.


One Washakie County Assessor (four-year term), currently held Kathy Treanor.

One Washakie County Attorney (four-year term), currently held by John Worrall.

One Washakie County Clerk (four-year term), currently held by Mary Grace Strauch.

One Washakie County Clerk of District Court (four-year term), currently held by Suzanne Whitlock.

One Washakie County County Coroner (four-year term), currently held by Jeff Lapp.

One Washakie County Sheriff (four-year term), currently held by Steven Rakness.

One Washakie County Treasurer (four-year term), currently held by Doris Kern.

Partisan offices to be elected on Aug. 21 include 9 pairs of Republican Precinct committee members, and 8 pairs of Democratic Precinct committee members.

Non-partisan offices to be nominated at the Aug. 21 primary for the City of Worland include:

One Council Member, Ward 1 (two-year term), currently held by Gary Gerber. Gerber did state last week that he would seek election to the seat he was appointed.

One Council Member, Ward 1 (four-year term), currently held by Lisa Fernandez.

One Council Member, Ward 2 (four-year term), currently held by Christy Schneider. Schneider, who was appointed to the seat, said last week she would be filing for election.

Two Council Members, Ward 3 (four-year terms), currently held by Michele Rideout and Loresa Brinkerhoff.

Both Brinkerhoff and Fernandez have expressed that they will not seek re-election.

The last day to register to vote will be August 6, although voters may register at the polls on August 21 with proper identification.
