WORLAND - For the first year the Washakie County School District No. 1 District Teacher of the Year and Board Master Teacher of the Year are the same person and this year's honoree is Worland Middle School eighth-grade math teacher Kenna Lamb.

Lamb was honored by the board at Monday's regular meeting with Chairman Don Bryant presenting her with a plaque.

She was nominated for the Master Teacher of the Year award by her principal Ryan Clark.

Lamb said, "It really is an honor to receive these awards. I never even expected that to happen, never thought that would be me. I love working in the district. I love the people I work with, the staff, the teachers, the kids. I do it because I love working with the kids and teaching math."

Lamb has worked in the district for 10 years, five as a paraeducator and the past five as a math teacher at WMS.

"I love math, and I really like being able to help students learn how to use math. I feel that's what I'm good at, helping students learn math," she said. "Math, people either love it or they hate it. I grew up thinking I was not good at math, but through the years taking math I realized I did like it and I actually was really good at it, so I felt like I could give back to people and help them learn it."

Lamb said she has worked at all levels but ended up teaching at the middle school and "I think it's a great place for me right now."

Lamb and her husband have three sons, one who is attending Montana State University in Bozeman, one at Northwest College and the youngest will be a junior at WHS.

In his nomination, Clark said Lamb is a leader at WMS. "She facilitates all of the eighth-grade team meetings and accepts the challenge of coordinating all of the thoughts and ideas inside the that team, creating a dynamic and well-organized unit. Her classroom instruction is intentionally focused from bell to bell."

He added that Lamb "spend a great deal of time forming relationships with students and works with our most hard to reach students outside of school time. Mrs. Lamb gives up her lunch to assist students as well as before school and after school almost every day."

He further wrote, "Mrs. Lamb's focus and attention to detail set her apart from her peers and earned her the rank of No. 1 in the state in eighth grade math on the 2017 PAWS [Proficiency Assessment for Wyoming Students] test."
