LARAMIE — The best the Worland Warriors can do is third place at the first Wyoming State 3A Soccer Tournament after falling to Cody 4-1 Friday in the semifinals.
The Warriors got off to a great start, or so they thought, when Nick Lange put a goal in just four minutes in. But the goal was called back on a handball penalty, according to Worland head coach Joe Kelley.
Cody responded with a scoring frenzy, putting in four goals to the Warriors’ one. Worland’s lone goal came from Scott Soderstrom’s head off a free kick.
“It was a typical Cody game I guess,” Kelley said of the loss. “The game was pretty physical. We didn’t play as well as we wanted to. We were a little bit out of our comfort zone, out of what we like to do. After having our goal called back, we were never able to get back to that comfort zone.
“We didn’t really come out flat, but kind of got out of our game and weren’t able to get back in it. It was kind of a disappointing loss for us, but we had quite a few fans around and we sure appreciated that. The parents’ support, having them come out and sit in less than ideal weather was great. We still have tomorrow to play. And we’d sure like to bring home that third place trophy.”
The Warriors will have to get through the Jackson Broncs in order to bring the trophy home. The teams have met twice during the regular season, with a 2-2 tie Mar. 28 and a Jackson victory of 1-0 May 10.
Kickoff is scheduled for 11 a.m. this morning on the Community Field in Laramie.
