Grapplers head to regionals with sights set on title

February 19, 2016

WORLAND – After a pair of second place finishes at the 3A East Regional Wrestling Tournament the past two years, the Warriors are ready to make their return to the top of the 3A East this weekend as they travel to Torrington – the site of this year’s regional culminating event.

Worland has taken the backseat to perennial 3A-powerhouse Douglas since moving over to the 3A East in 2012, its lone regional title coming in 2013.

But this year, the Warriors seem poised to take over the throne they’ve long worked toward.

Once again, Worland is loaded in the upper weights this season led by senior Austin Beck – 3A East champion at 220 last season and Worland’s lone returning state champion. He’s joined by fellow seniors Wade Goncalves at 182 and Sampson Rich at 285 – both having excellent seasons and also enter as favorites to contend for state titles this year.

Add last year’s 3A East 285-pound champion and eventual state runner-up Nathan Kern to the mix along with seniors JD Nelson (152) and Glen Anderson (120) and the Warriors look to have a good number of wrestlers who will be vying for regional titles.

Last year, Worland qualified 19 wrestlers for the state tournament by way of regionals. That number may not be as high again this season, but should still be in the double digits once the weekend is over.

The 3A East Regional Wrestling Tournament begins today and extends through Saturday.
