Free concert Monday night features music from five centuries

March 31, 2016

WORLAND - The University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra (UWSO) will be performing a tour concert at 7:30 p.m. Monday in the Worland Middle School Auditorium.

Veterans UWSO Music Director Michael Griffith will conduct and UW faculty violinist Sherry Sinift will be soloist.

The UWSO will perform music from five centuries, starting with a fanfare from Monteverdi's "Orfeo," and including music written just a few years ago by Steve Reistster. In between the audience will hear works including Dvorak's "My Home Overture," the finale to Shostakovich's 5th Symphony, the Bartok First Rhapsody, and more. As an encore, they even have the Overture to "West Side Story" ready.

Sinift has performed for Wyoming audiences with the Summit Chamber Players and in recital, plus in solo roles with the Wyoming Symphony of Casper, the Cheyenne Symphony, and the UWSO.

In addition, Sinift has served as concertmaster of the various orchestras in Wisconsin. She is a devoted violin and viola teacher of younger students, is founder and director of the String Academy of Wyoming, and a supervising teacher for the UW String Project. The two programs serve more than 100 young string players in Laramie. Former String Academy students have gone on to study at major music schools and have integrated music into their lives as professionals or as passionate amateurs.

Now in his 27th year as director of orchestral activities at UW, Griffith has conducted concerts in such locations as Rio de Janeiro and New York's Times Square. He and the UWSO are winners of an ASCAP/American Symphony Orchestra League Award for Adventurous Programming, he was twice elected a top 10 teacher at UW, and he has been a visiting professor at such prestigious institutions as Finland's Sibelius Academy and Shanghai University, where he is returning this summer. Griffith has conducted the Wyoming All-State Orchestra three times, and has led similar ensembles from the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast and in China as well.

The concert is free.

Worland schools music instructor Chad Rose is a UW Symphony Orchestra alumnus.

Orchestra tours are funded UW, by the Symphony Association for the University of Wyoming and its Ricky Blackstone Orchestra Travel Endowment, private donors and host communities. The UWSO is a part of the UW Department of Music.
