Wyoming AG settles claims against sham cancer charities

CASPER (AP) — Wyoming is one of several states involved in a settlement of a massive fraud case involving two cancer charities labeled “shams” by the Federal Trade Commission.
The Casper Star-Tribune reports that Wyoming Attorney General Peter Michael announced the settlement with Cancer Fund of America and Cancer Support Services Wednesday.
The $75.8 million agreement, which was filed in federal court in Arizona, brings an end to the national organizations and bans the head of the charities, James Reynolds, from future charitable work.
The complaint filed last year accused Reynolds and others of spending donations meant for cancer patients on six-figure salaries and luxury vacations between 2008 and 2012.
Reynolds’ son and ex-wife previously agreed to settlements involving two related charities. The former president of Cancer Support Services also settled earlier.
