Former Cowboy Mason Finley 11th in men's discus in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO (Aug. 13, 2016) – Former Cowboys standout Mason Finley wrapped up his time at the Games of the XXXI Olympiad in Rio on Saturday, placing 11th in the men’s discus as he became the first American to compete in the final round of the event since Casey Malone in 2004.
Finley’s first throw of the day measured 198 feet, 3.25 inches (60.43 meters), about 10 feet under his best throw of the preliminary round. He fouled on his second attempt, throwing the implement into the netting surrounding the ring.
Finley bounced back on his third attempt with his best throw of the day, a 203-7 (62.05m) toss that moved him ahead of 12th-place finisher Andrius Gudzius of Lithuania. The top eight competitors through three throws received three additional attempts to battle for the podium, but Finley’s top mark didn’t reach the necessary threshold.
Germany’s Christoph Harting overtook Poland’s Piotr Malachowski on his final attempt to win the gold medal with a toss of 224-3.75 (68.37m), a personal best. Malachowski took silver at 221-7.5 (67.55m), while Germany’s Daniel Jasinski earned the bronze with a mark of 219-11.75 (67.05m).
