East Side discusses safety response with parents

October 6, 2016

WORLAND – Four parents attended the Standard Protocol Response (SPR) meeting last Thursday evening at East Side Elementary School.

Principal Kenneth Dietz said the protocol is an action-based program and “is a classroom response for students and teachers in respect to an incident, intruder or threat at the school.” He added. “The (protocol) unifies code language for all school and law enforcement.”

Following a short video on SPR and its origins, Dietz went over the four actions students experience with this protocol. SPR is founded on four actions: lockout, lockdown, evacuation and shelter. For example, Dietz said students practice the path they walk if they are outside and the school goes on lockdown.

Dietz said it’s important for him to make sure the students practice, especially the younger ones, so they are familiar with the protocol. He said just in case there is an emergency; it won’t be scary for students.

Following the meeting, two parents addressed the district’s alert system and said they did not receive notification via email about the statewide threat that happened the week prior until later in the evening.

Dietz addressed the concern and asked parents to make sure they have their alert system set up to their phone for the most up-to-date information with the text message capability.
