Football players honored at school board meeting

October 12, 2016

TEN SLEEP – The entire Ten Sleep High School football team, coaches and two specific players received sportsmanship awards from the Wyoming High School Coaches Association during the Ten Sleep School Board meeting Monday evening.

Ten Sleep Principal Russ Budmayr explained to the board and guests that the referees don’t have to give this award, they just give it to who they think is deserving. There is no requirement that says that they have to give one. They just periodically pick some team or some player that impresses them.

Ten Sleep High School football coach Jake Zent and the entire team received a sportsmanship award for exemplary conduct and good sportsmanship during the Hulett vs. Ten Sleep football game. Officials stated, “Ten Sleep had a much larger team than Hulett and could have run up the score and put a hurt on them. However during the game they (Ten Sleep) demonstrated very good sportsmanship. They would make a point of helping Hulett players up and patting them on the back when they made a good play. When Ten Sleep players would make a foul or a hit that was even close to late, they would tell the officials they would watch out to not cause a problem. The coaches late in the game made a point of not running up the score even though they (Hulett) could not sub because they only had six players.”

Zayne Cooper also received an award for his exemplary conduct and good sportsmanship during the Ten Sleep vs. Little Snake River game.

“Game officials stated, Ten Sleep varsity football player number 22 (Zayne Cooper) consistently displayed good sportsmanship during the contest. He played hard throughout the contest both on offense and defense. Many times at the conclusion of a play he was observed helping opponents up after he had tackled or blocked them to the ground. We overheard him asking an opponents if they were okay after a particularly hard hit. He was similarly helpful to his teammates throughout the game. Late in the second half player number 22 (Cooper) thanked the officiating crew for making the trip to Baggs to work the game, a rare comment by a player. Following the game after shaking hands with the opposing team he ran to the end zone to shake hands with and thank the officiating crew again.”

Corey Rice received an award for exemplary conduct and good sportsmanship shown during the Farson-Eden vs. Ten Sleep football game held Sept. 23.

Budmayr said, “I’ve been watching Corey the last three to four weeks. Our team’s kinda been decimated by injuries and we are down to six or seven players. Corey is our quarterback and if you go to any of our games, that poor kid is in the backfield running for his life, doing the best he can. I caught him in the hall today and I said, ‘Corey for as much punishment as you take and as beaten up as you are getting, I just want you to know that we appreciate that you never complain, you never pout, you never throw a fit, you never get after your team mates. You just pick yourself back up, call another play and run for your life.’

“You know what Corey said to me? Honest to God, he said, ‘well Mr. Budmayr, I’m team captain and that wouldn’t set a very good example for the rest of the players.’”

Zent, Cooper and Rice received certificates from the state for their achievements.
