Excellent rating for Black Thunder

Three groups receive separate honors

October 22, 2016

WORLAND — The Worland High School Black Thunder marching band got an excellent rating (the second highest rating possible) at the Wyoming State Marching Band competition in Casper last Saturday.

This is the second year the band received an excellent rating. They broke into the top tier in 2014 with a superior rating.

Director Willie Wright said the brass section and the color guard each received a caption award, which means they received a score better than 90 percent.

He said the trombone section was awarded a Trooper Award for hard work and leadership. The award was presented by the Casper Troopers.

“I felt the band did an outstanding job all season long. We had one of the best seasons, if not the best season, as far as learning the music, marching technique, our sound, since I’ve been here,” Wright said.

He added, “The results are what they were. We don’t have any control over what the judges put down or where we’re at in the program. I feel this organization has gotten better every year. The group does a great job supporting each other and doing their best every day in rehearsal. I’m extremely proud of this band.”

“That state event, we really work our tails off for that all year from the beginning of August until the middle of October. We start our marching music in the spring,” Wright said.

There are 69 members this year and Wright said this is the first year all but one of the members competed. He said one member was out with a knee injury. In years past, he said they have been missing several members due other events or ineligibility.

“That’s a testament to their hardworking attitude,” Wright said of this year’s Black Thunder.
