God came to dwell among us

December 24, 2016

“Do not be afraid; for behold, I proclaim to you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. For today in the city of David a savior has been born for you who is Messiah and Lord.” Luke 2:10-11

“All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: ‘Behold, the virgin shall be with child and bear a son, and they shall name him Emmanuel’, which means ‘God is with us.’” Matthew 1:22-23

Sometimes in the midst of all the Christmas plays, programs and parties, we forget what it is that we actually celebrate on this day. Maybe we don’t forget; but instead just put it to the side and only give it a passing thought. Whatever the case may be, it is important that we take the time to ponder the meaning of this awesome event for us.

This was an event unlike any other in the history of mankind. Jesus Christ, God Himself, came to dwell among us. To be like us in all things but sin.

What does this mean for us that God came to dwell among us? It means that we no longer have to be afraid. God has revealed himself to us and has come to save us. It means that we don’t have to fear pain and suffering, sin and death any longer. It doesn’t mean that we won’t suffer or feel pain, but in the end we have the sure hope that Jesus Christ will save us.

Take a few moments today to ponder on this reality. What it means for the world that the God of the universe loved us so much that he came to dwell with us, to be with us in all things.

“And when we give each other gifts in his name, let us remember that he has given us the sun and the moon and the stars and the earth with its forests and mountains and oceans - and all that lives and moves upon them. He has given us all the green things and everything that blossoms and bears fruit - and all that we quarrel about and all that we have misused - and to save us from our foolishness, from all our sins, he has come down to earth and gave us himself” - Sigrid Undset.

May God bless each and every one of you this Christmas season.
