WORLAND -The Worland High School boys swimming roster does not have as many swimmers like that of Lander High School, but what they lack in numbers they make up for in talent.

In the final home swim meet for WHS seniors Caleb Truman, Jason Wang and Tristan Warren, the Warriors ended the Worland Invite in third place Saturday afternoon at the Worland Aquatic Center.

Coming close to breaking the WHS boys diving record of 271.35 during Friday's Pre-Invite between Douglas and Newcastle, Truman had another terrific outing scoring a 257.2 Saturday, earning him first place, 10.7 points better Powell's Hudson Wilkerson who finished second.

The 200-yard medley relay team of Josiah Sanchez, Tristan Warren, Zayne Cooper and Dalton Jeffries finished first with a time of 1:51.23. Freshman Zane Cooper had two second-place finishes, one in the 200-yard freestyle and the other in the 500-yard freestyle.

With the team performing as well as they have, WHS boys swimming coach Danielle Warren gave credit to the swimmers and the dedication they've shown not only during the season but in the offseason as well.

"Quite a few of them swim the mornings before practice, after school and also have strength training classes. Each of them in their own way have developed and are contributing their own piece to being good this year," said Warren.

Coach Warren has also liked the progress she's seen from her swimmers who are just outside scoring points for the team, like Andrew Nelson, Anthony Padilla and Gabe Durrant.

"Andrew (Nelson) in just the short amount of time we've had him has progressed a ton. Even though he was under the weather this weekend he still did a nice job in the water. He's one we'd like to see put in the time outside the season. He's very strong in the water and just needs to work on the techniques. Gabe (Durrant) cut 12 seconds in both events he swam. It was cool because on Friday he cut 3 seconds from each event then Saturday cut 12 seconds on top of that, so he's been rocking it lately," said Warren. "Anthony (Padilla) started swimming a 1:55 in the breaststroke and is now swimming a 1:38 in the breaststroke which was another crazy time drop. They're working hard plus they're getting their techniques down and that's really helping them improve."

While this is coach Warren's first season at the helm of Worland boys swimming she's been involved with the program and she's seen the work the three seniors, Truman, Wang and Warren, have put it in to improve and put their mark on Warrior swimming.

Caleb Truman

"It was funny as we sat there after a meet, he said that he sucked as a freshman," said coach Warren. "When people look at him and ask what did he do to become so good. Really all he did was put the work in over the offseason. He went to diving camps in Indiana the past two summers. He's definitely devoted his time to making sure he's ready. You look at the injury he had to start the season, that would have been a death sentence for some, but because he's worked so hard and has that muscle memory it doesn't faze him. He can get on the board and whatever I ask of him he can do it. He's so confident with it because of his experience and dedication he's put into it on his own time. The most impressive thing for us coaches is he hasn't really done any swimming workouts. We asked him to swim a 50-yard, got in and swam a 25 (seconds) 50-yard freestyle. That same day he swan a 56 (seconds) in the 100-yard free. He's just a phenomenal athlete all-around," said coach Warren.

Jason Wang

"He started swimming last season or the year before and didn't know how to swim but he came out and worked hard. This year he was talked into diving and he progressed so quickly. Even when he hit the board, he'd get right out of the water, knowing what he did wrong and correct it on the next dive. That's really hard, most people would say they were done but I just love his resiliency and how hard he works. From his first meet until now he's improved his score every time and he's only 19 points from qualifying for state. I've been really impressed with his tenacity and his willingness to learn. It shows every time he steps on the diving board. It has been a lot of fun coaching him and watching him improve each day," said coach Warren.

Tristan Warren

"He has worked his tail off which has shown. His fastest breaststroke was a 1:08 and that was last year at state coming off a broken collar bone. This year his first race of the year he swam a 1:06. He looks really strong in the water. He's also taken on the leadership role and at first it took some time for him to grow into that leadership role but he and Caleb have come into their own. He's been working hard and when conference and state come around we're expecting the times to drop," said coach Warren about her son.

Next for the Warriors is a trip to Riverton on Friday for a 4 p.m. contest, then Pinedale on Saturday for an 11 a.m. meet.
