Worland track prepares for the 3A East regional meet

WORLAND - It did not take long for the Wyoming high school track season to sprint by.

Across the state regional meets for all classes will be taking place this weekend as schools try to send as many athletes as possible to the state track and field meet starting May 18.

The Worland High School track team heads to Thermopolis for the 3A East Regional Meet on Friday and Saturday. Along with her athletes, WHS track coach Tracey Wiley is excited to get the postseason underway.

"We'll be taking 37, we will take more boys than girls because of our numbers," said Wiley. "If the boys play their cards right they can do some really good things."

Last season the Warriors were the 3A East champions and have a chance at repeating in Thermopolis, but there will be tough competition with the likes of Douglas High School standing in the way.

"We see Douglas for the first time this year and they've put in some good weeks down the stretch. Our boys have to go and perform and that's one reason I wanted them on Thermop's track before regionals. That way they can get used to what regionals will be like. They'll be ready for it because they're all good competitors and know they can do good things together as a team," said Wiley.

Last week Worland track was split into two teams due to Thermopolis only allowing four athletes per event. Some of the team traveled to Cody on Thursday while the rest competed in Thermopolis on Friday.

The team's performance in Thermopolis did not meet their expectations but was still a good opportunity for Worland to finetune some things before regionals.

"They didn't do too bad, we probably didn't perform as well as we like and some of those smaller schools whipped up on us, but it was good competition for us heading into regionals," said Wiley.

Wiley and her coaching staff have constructed their regional roster and will have held in-team competitions during Monday's practice to put the finishing touches on the regional team.

"During the weekend we as coaches all talked on who to take and there is a strategy to filling out our roster. You want to have the top athletes in each event and position yourself the best you can. We used Cody and Thermop to help make those decisions. It was nice because I was getting messages from the kids in Cody telling me how they were doing and that they moved into the top four," said Wiley. "We have it lined out and will have some competitions in practice [Monday]."

With the postseason here Wiley will have her athletes focusing on their precision for their events because at this point in the season every little bit helps.

"We just maintain, and try not to do anything too hard. We'll put in fewer meters as far conditioning. It is a little tricky because we don't want to over-run, over-throw or over-jump them at this point in the season. We'll look to finetune getting out of the blocks or our handoffs. Some of the kids are sitting real close to beating another team. So working on the finer aspects of track is what we will focus on," said Wiley.

Wiley added, "Douglas has surpassed us and we need to go perform like we can or better. It's not going to be easy but if we can do the things we've been working on all season it will put us in a good position and hopefully we can take all 37 to state."
