July 25, 2017

WORLAND – Two wildland fires kept firefighters from Worland, Ten Sleep, the Bureau of Land Management and the U.S. Forest Service busy this weekend, in both the Worland and Ten Sleep areas

On Saturday afternoon about 3:15 p.m., the Worland Fire Department was called to assist Ten Sleep Fire with a blaze approximately 20 miles South of Ten Sleep. Called the “Otter Fire,” the fire was started by lightning and due to heavy brush fuel such as juniper and sage, quickly spread to over 12 acres.

Crews from Ten Sleep, Worland, BLM, and Forest Service along with air resources stationed out of Riverton were able to stop the fire at 12.17 acres.

Worland Fire District Chief Chris Kocher reported that crews were still on the scene of the fire at 2 a.m. Sunday.

On Sunday afternoon at approximately 12:50 p.m., Worland Fire was called to property located at 774 West River Road for a controlled garbage fire that resulted in a fast-moving grass fire.

Worland was aided by the BLM and Washakie County Sheriff’s Office and was able to get the fire stopped at 7.6 acres, with no structures damaged.

Two single-engine air tankers stationed out of Riverton were launched during the firefighting operation.

Chief Kocher reported firefighters remained on scene until 4:41 p.m.
