At The Museum: 'The Sound of Music' auditions start Saturday

August 23, 2017

The Washakie Museum will be ‘alive with the sound music’ in just a matter of weeks as we prepare to undertake the large-scale community musical production of “The Sound of Music.” We’d love to have you involved! There are opportunities from off-stage support to on-stage roles, both singing and non-singing. Let us know you’d like to be involved by coming to auditions this coming Saturday from 9 a.m. – 3 p.m. or Monday, Aug. 28 from 5-8 p.m.

If these times don’t fit into your schedule, please call the Museum at 347-4102 and ask for Cheryl or Sherryl or contact directors Lew Markley at 347-8475 or Dan Frederick at 347-8448.

Auditions will consist of reading a short part from the script, singing a few bars of a song, and checking your vocal range. Allow 5-10 minutes for your audition. Preparation packets are available at the front desk of the Museum.

If an off-stage role is your preference, please stop by to complete a form and let us know what your interest and skills are. We need people interested in costuming, set construction, acquiring and organizing props, technical assistance, costume changing, and assistant stage management.

“The Sound of Music” is one of the world’s most beloved musicals. A tuneful, heartwarming story, it is based on the real-life story of the Von Trapp Family singers, one of the world’s best-known concert groups in the era immediately preceding World War II. When Maria, a postulant, proves too high-spirited for the religious life, she is dispatched to serve as governess for the seven children of a widowed naval captain. Maria wins over the youngsters and captures the heart of the stern Captain, and they marry. When the Nazis invade Austria the family’s world is turned upside down and matters of the heart and convictions change the course of life.

In addition to the story, there is the unforgettable music of Richard Rodgers and Oscar Hammerstein II: “How Do You Solve a Problem Like Maria,” “My Favorite Things,” “Sixteen Going on Seventeen,” “Something Good,” “The Lonely Goatherd,” “Climb Every Mountain,” and more.

Roles include the Captain, Maria, and seven children, The Mother Abbess, Sisters, Franz the butler, the young suitor Rolf Gruber, Baroness Schraeder, Max Detweiler, Ursula, Herr Zeller, Baron Elberfeld, and Admiral von Schreiber. There are 23 speaking characters, additional roles for nuns, neighbors, and festival contestants.

Rehearsals begin Monday, Sept. 11 with performances scheduled for Oct. 27 and 28 at the Worland Middle School Auditorium. Come be a part of an unforgettable experience. There’s nothing to compare to the thrill of experiencing theatre with your local community.
