WORLAND - The Admiral Beverage Medical Center (ABMC) is partnering with the Wyoming Cancer Coalition and Wyoming Cancer Resource Service for a colon cancer awareness event that began Monday and concludes today.

Linda Hausner, registered nurse for ABMC said she suggested the idea because she wanted to bring awareness to colon cancer and other cancers.

As a breast cancer survivor, awareness of the types of cancers that are out there, as well as awareness of screenings that are available for certain cancers is near to her heart, Hausner said.

The mini health fair and Colon Cancer Awareness event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the open space next to the center in the 700 block of Robertson Avenue at the 7th Street Plaza.

People can walk through 12-foot high, 12-foot wide inflatable colon provided by the Wyoming Cancer Coalition to see what a healthy colon looks like as well as what a colon looks like with different diseases including polyps and Chrone's and advanced colon cancer.

Val Walsh-Haines, program manager of Wyoming Cancer Resource Services – Cody office, said, "We're here to educate the folks of Worland on the importance of screening [for colon cancer]."

Walsh-Haines said she and Wanda Webb are available to discuss a colonoscopy, recommended for men over the age of 50, or the new take-home FIT (fecal immunochemical test). The take-home test has to be done annually, she said. If a colonoscopy comes back clean, men only need to be test every 10 years.

The event is being held in memory of Mike Bryant, who passed away last month after a battle with cancer.

There are drawings for a variety of prizes, including University of Wyoming Cowboys merchandise and a Cowboys football.

Walsh-Haines is the program manager for Region V that includes Washakie, Big Horn, Fremont, Hot Springs, Park and Teton counties.

The Wyoming Cancer Resource Services Wyoming Cancer Resource Services is a program that provides communities with cancer prevention and control services including:
