Fair Board in search of member, bookkeeper

December 13, 2017

WORLAND – The Washakie County Fair Board held their monthly meeting on Monday, and stressed the need to fill an empty board position and hire a bookkeeper to keep the board on track heading into the 2018 fair season.

Currently advertising both positions, the board announced a special meeting for Dec. 27 to review applications for the bookkeeper position and announce a new hire. The job opening will be advertised until Dec. 22.; the open board position will be advertised until filled, at which time new officers will be announced and a new treasurer will be appointed.

Washakie County Commission Chairman Terry Wolf, on hand for the meeting, recommended the board deliver to the commission a list of repairs needed at the fairgrounds, for scheduling and budget purposes. In particular, the board noted sound system and electrical problems that need to be addressed before the next fair.

With a current balance of $20,041.86, the board approved a voucher for $1,500 to the FFA Chief Washakie chapter for gate attendant duties during the 2017 fair.

It was also reported that the fair board is pursuing a carnival vendor for the fair, although most regional vendors are either booked or require a four-year wait to be available for Washakie County. Options are currently being evaluated.

The board also discussed the rules regarding showmanship at the fair, as one participant is a member of agriculture groups in both Washakie and Big Horn counties, and has requested permission to show in both at some capacity. Currently, rules state that stock showmen reside in the county.

Also, for the Bred and Fed program, the board debated whether a landowner with land in both counties could qualify to show in both counties under current rules. The board decided to study the rules further and consult with local 4-H advisors.
