WORLAND - The 3A East regional track and field meet is underway today and tomorrow at Douglas High School, and the Worland Warriors and Lady Warriors are out to bring home as many medals as possible.

"Practice has been really good this week," said WHS track and field coach Tracey Wiley. "We've gotten a lot accomplished and we've worked on fine-tuning some things."

The Warriors have a competitor in all 18 events, while the Lady Warriors have only three events they won't be competing in, the 4x800-meter relay, 4x400-meter relay and pole vault.

Looking at the rankings from the regular season both teams have athletes in the top eight in the 3A East conference, and a handful are the favorites in their respective events.

Alexa Caballero (discus), Josh Garza (pole vault), Porter Harman (1,600-meter, 3,200-meter), McKenna Mickelson (triple jump), Luke Mortimer (300-meter hurdles) and Maclin Wiley (discus) are the season's top performers in their events.

Harman is also the Worland's only returning regional champion, having won both the 1,600-meter and 3,200-meter last season. While as a team the Warriors finished second to Douglas.

Warrior Josh Garza charges ahead during a pole vault attempt at Worland High School on April 12.

"Luke Mortimer is in the top eight for all four of his events, Jaden Mickelson is in the top-eight for his four events, we have several kids in the top eight. Some kids are sitting nine and 10 and it's real close. Many of them stopped by my room to see where they sit. The cool thing is I didn't even have to ask them to stop by, they just did it on their own. The kids are excited and we're ready as coaches, and this is what it is all about.

"The kids are ready for it and this is what they've worked for all season. I hope they believe in themselves because they can do it. We have several kids in the top eight and now they need to finish it off," said Wiley.

Having so many athletes in the top-eight rankings or on the cusp is promising for both the Warriors and Lady Warriors but if either are to bring home a team trophy, it'll be about finishing strong and proving those rankings out on the track or field.

"It's always nice to see kids bring home some hardware. You never know where the other teams are going to put their kids, so we'll have to wait and see. But hopefully we can bring home some individual placers as well as some team honors," said Wiley.
