Thermopolis to repair main road in 2020

June 2, 2018

THERMOPOLIS – Engineers from the Wyoming Department of Transportation hosted a public meeting for Thermopolis residents on Thursday to outline an upcoming road project that will effectively replace 2.6 miles of U. S. Highway 20 / 789 through the town in 2020.

The project, slated to open for bids in fall 2019, will include federal Americans with Disabilities Act compliance improvements to 16 intersections, thermal plastic school crossing road markings, and improved drainage.

WYDOT spokesman Cody Beers noted that the agency will work with the State Parks Department to take care of water-damaged roads outside Hot Springs State Park, and improve drainage.

Noting that there were numerous areas of bad subgrade materials, engineers indicated that two-way traffic will be maintained as a much as possible during replacement, along with unfettered access to businesses and residences.

The project will be completed in three phases, and is expected to be completed by September 2020.

When asked about the possible addition of another stoplight in Thermopolis, to help reduce seasonal traffic for residents, Beers noted that the state had conducted a warrant study on the matter, and Thermopolis does not warrant a new light at this time.
