County data now available on UW website

November 25, 2015

WORLAND — Details about the University of Wyoming’s interaction with the state’s 23 counties are available online.

The data, which includes enrollment at UW and throughout the state via the Outreach School; alumni totals; local educational programs and projects; local economic impact; and student financial aid and employment numbers are featured, along with final numbers, under the category “Wyoming Totals.”

For Washakie County, the data shows 63 students from the county enrolled at the campus in Laramie, three enrolled at UW-Casper and 26 enrolled through the Outreach School.

There are 551 residents in the county who are alumni members.

UW Vice President of Governmental and Community Affairs Chris Boswell said the data is “really to the benefit of those who seek it out. It’s intention, it’s evolved over time, in the past we used it primarily in our interactions with legislators in an attempt to let legislators know what’s happening at the local level and the various university efforts that are being accomplished at the local level. The value goes well beyond that. It’s important for the university to quantify what we’re doing out in the state and it’s also important for folks out in the state to look and try to find information without having to do too much searching. It lets folks know what’s happening in the state. It’s a snapshot of the university’s relationship with the counties.”

The data tracks those using health care programs and agriculture assistance as well. Data shows that there were 19,853 contacts with UW Cooperative Extension Service in Washakie County over the past fiscal year, July 1, 2014 to June 30, 2015.

The data also shows seven UW non-student employees in the county with a payroll of $160,148. Boswell said employees can be extension or researchers or other outreach employees.

Financial aid for students from Washakie County attending UW amounts to $739,011, according to the data.

Boswell said the financial aid numbers are useful of those wanting to come to UW as it shows there is a “boatload of financial resources” available.

In Hot Springs County, there are 33 students at the Laramie campus, one at UW-Casper and six at the Outreach School with 306 alumni. There are five UW employees in the county with a payroll of $160,836, according to the data. Financial aid to students in the county is at $385,590.

There are 100 students from Big Horn County enrolled at the Laramie campus, according to the data and 34 at the Outreach School with 688 alumni members. There are 20 UW employees in the county with a payroll of $298,439. Financial aid for students totals $1.4 million.

Park County has the highest enrollment of the four Big Horn Basin counties with 245 students enrolled at the UW Laramie campus. There are three Park County residents at UW-Casper and 76 in the Outreach School, with 1,859 alumni members. There are 55 UW employees in the county with a payroll of $1,358,119. Financial aid for the county students amounts to $2.8 million.

Boswell said he anticipates the data and the website continuing to evolve.

He added, “Outreach occurs more by people experiencing the outreach and being affected by it personally or witnessing it personally rather than the university telling them there is outreach.

“This (the data website) is just one of the tools available for folks wanting to know what the university is doing in their communities.”

Data can be accessed under UW’s main Web page in the A-Z directory under Governmental and Community Affairs. To view a complete list for each county, and also Wyoming totals go to http://www.uwyo.edu/govcom/county/.
