New management at golf course

Worland City Council accepts Billings bid for Green Hill Golf Course

March 11, 2016

WORLAND – Two proposals were heard at Worland City Council’s work session Monday night and one was accepted Tuesday night by Worland City Council.

The two companies that came to Worland and presented their proposals were KD Golf Management out of Greybull and Go Play Golf LLC from Billings.

The proposal accepted by the city council was from Gary Schampeny of Go Play Golf LLC.

Schampeny from Go Play Golf has management experience with golf course management in Billings, Mont., and also takes care of turf on several different golf courses in Wyoming and Montana, Worland Superintendent of Public Works Brian Burky said.

Schampeny said he’s worked in the golf industry 30 to 40 years and started while he was in college.

After college, he worked at a golf company for 16 years in Minnesota and then started his own company called Go Play Golf LLC in the early 2000s with other investors.

Though both companies had solid proposals with regard to Green Hills Golf Course maintenance, Burky said Go Play Golf had more responses to the business aspect of it.

Burky said, “Go Play Golf LLC had more ideas to grow use at the golf course and how to engage people and get them involved out there.” Some of those ideas include “utilizing Facebook, social media and the website to keep patrons updated on what’s going on at the golf course.”

While the Schampeny’s contract has been accepted Burky said the negotiations need to be finalized and, “Right now … we’re moving forward with the contract negotiations … so there’s quite a bit of details need to be worked out.”

“I’m very optimistic. It was an excellent proposal and I think we’re going to work through the negotiations and details that we need to,” Burky said.

Burky said if contract negotiations work out Schampeny would start in the upcoming weeks, and “the target to have golf course open is the first of April,” Burky said.

Schampeny said while there will be bumps in the road “It’ll be a fun time and he looks forward to it,” in reference to starting work at Green Hills Golf Course.
