WORLAND – A City of Worland council member brought up the idea of incorporating a dog park in an existing park for the community and their hounds to enjoy at the March 15 Worland City Council meeting.

Council member Lisa Fernandez, Ward 1, asked if it would be possible to put a dog park by the community garden in Newell Sargent Park.

Newell Sargent Park is located at 8th and Washakie and has served the community as a recreational outlet for many years.

At the meeting, Superintendent of Public Works Brian Burky said at the meeting that he would talk to Buildings & Grounds Supervisor Mike Gerber about the idea.

He did, and Gerber said in an interview Thursday, "It's something we would like to pursue ... but having the space is the biggest concern at this time."

Gerber said he believes a dog park would be a good thing for the community, but doesn't believe Newell Sargent Park is the ideal location.

"It'd be nice it if was centrally located for the people, of course, but it's about the funding and space for it," Gerber said.

"We haven't really gone into detail about it, [cost and location]" but said updates would be given when more information is available.

Dog Parks Nearby

Thermopolis has added a dog park to their community.

John Fish, the Hot Springs State Park assistant superintendent, said the dog park is located on Park Street between the railroad track and across from Big Horn River.

Fish added that the dog park was completed in the fall 2015 by the Thermopolis Mustangs, the local 4-H youth group chapter.

"It's been a big hit with the locals and out-of-towners," Fish said.
