WORLAND- Members of the Ten Sleep/Hyattville Scrappers represented Team Wyoming at the National Middle School Dual Tournament in Des Moines, Iowa, over Easter weekend. Team Wyoming would go on to take first place in the silver bracket.

Seventh graders Lane Mcbee, Luke Goncalves, and eight grader Daniel Weyrich, all from Worland, travelled to Des Moines, after having successfully qualified for the event at the state qualifier in Green River. The boys would wrestle in eight matches against other teams from Iowa, South Dakota, Montana and Indiana.

At nationals Goncalves would go on to earn All-American status after going 5-3 during the tournament in the 130-pound weight class.

To earn All-American status a wrestler needs to have a winning record during the tournament, both Mcbee (145-pound weight class) and Weyrich (110-pound weight class) fell just short by one win each.

Assistant coach Nathan Weyrich, who traveled with the boys to Des Moines, said, "They all wrestled tough and got to match up against quality wrestlers.  Luke was able to achieve All-American and both Daniel and Lane were one win away from qualifying.  It was great for the boys to get outside of the state and see some different wrestling styles."

It was a successful season for these boys as they put in the sweat equity needed to reach this level. Coach Carl Nielssen, who has coached the Ten Sleep/Hyattville team for 20 years, commented, "All my wrestlers work very hard. The three that went to Nationals are hard workers, they are good young men.  I think they will go far in the future, I'm very proud to be their coach and look for more great things from them in the future."

Assistant coach Wade Goncalves, who traveled with the team to the Green River qualifier and Des Moines, added, "I'm really proud of what they did.  I know from experience that this tournament is really competitive and for Lane, Luke and Daniel to go out there and compete is pretty exciting and I'm excited to see what they'll accomplish in the future."

The Ten Sleep/Hyattville Scrappers parents and fans additionally would like to say, "We are all so proud of these boys and their accomplishments in the sport of wrestling and for representing our area and state on Team Wyoming."  They'd also like to thank the Worland Middle School coaching staff of Billy St. Clair, Dean Barent and Joe Winkler for their help this season.
