WORLAND — The American Legion Auxiliary Floyd Minch Unit 44 have selected five area juniors as delegates to the 74th session of the American Legion Auxiliary Wyoming Girls State at Northwest College in Powell June 11-18.

The unit selected Worland High School juniors Madisyn Boltz and Mackenzie Cottrell, Ten Sleep junior Madison Anderson and Thermopolis juniors Shayna Bauer and Chloe Crosby.

The American Legion Auxiliary Girls State was established in 1941 and is an annual program designed as a practical experience in self-government, based on Wyoming state government. Wyoming Girls State was not held in 1944 and 1945 due to World War II. Girls State is a non-partisan and non-political in that no existing party is promoted.

The program emphasizes the importance of government in modern life and educates young women in the duties, privileges, rights and responsibilities of American citizenship. According to a release from the American Legion Auxiliary, the program “awakens a sincere conviction that a well-informed, intelligent, participating citizenry is vital to protect and preserve our American institutions and our democracy.” These goals are achieved by actual participation in a simulation of the political and government process.

The five area juniors were selected by the local unit for their outstanding achievements in their schools and communities.

The American Legion Auxiliary Floyd Minch Unit 44 raises funds to sponsor the delegates through raffles, business donations, schools and funding from the Festival of Trees.
