POWELL - Worland High School swimmers traveled to Powell Thursday evening in a showdown with the Powell Panthers. The Lady Warriors lost the dual 101-82 to their 3A Northeast conference rivals but the team had a new state automatic qualifier as well as strengthening the overall team by swimming in off events.

Megan Molitor automatically qualified for the state meet in the 200yd individual medley, Juli Warren won the 200yd and 500yd freestyle race and also AQ'd in 200yd free. Ellyse Russell won the 50yd and 100yd free. The 400yd free relay team of Warren, Russell, Molitor and Kristen Collingwood won as well.

"It went pretty well, we had a lot of girls swimming in off events," said WHS swim coach Mike Blissett, "Our team and Powell match up well. We have around the same number of swimmers and our skill levels are about the same too. We had great races all through the night and we'll see them again next Saturday at our Invite, which will be exciting."

Coach Blissett approached the dual with the bigger picture in mind. Rather than enter his swimmers in only their best events, he placed swimmers in events they haven't swam as a way to strengthen the team.

"We had some girls trying out different events and had fun with it. We like to get them in one normal event then have them swim in an off-event to see what they can do. Most of the time you like for your swimmers to at least have swam in every event during the season, just so you can see where they are at. It probably cost us points tonight but it's more important to do things like that than to only focus on winning. It gives the girls a chance to show the coaches something new and a fun way to mix things up during the regular season," said Blissett.

"Overall we had some times come down today and we have some girls that are still real close. So Saturday we're hoping they get fired up and start dropping time and getting a few more girls qualified," said Blissett.

The Lady Warriors will head to Newcastle for the Newcastle Invite on Saturday afternoon.
