DAILY NEWS/ Alex Kuhn

Lady Warrior golfer Katelin Scheuerman poses after finishing second at the 3A State tournament at the Powell Golf Club in Powell Saturday morning.

WORLAND - Junior Worland high school golfer Katelin Scheuerman finished her fall season on a tear. The final three tournaments Scheuerman finished third at the Worland Invite, second at the regional tournament in Buffalo and capped off her season with a second-place finish at the state tournament in Powell on Friday shooting an 88.

Scheduled to be a two-day tournament, day two of state was cancelled due to rain. "The clouds parted on the second day but the course was so saturated there was no way we were going to be able to play, just too much standing water," said WHS golf coach Chad Rose.

Scheuerman also earned 3A all-state honors, which goes to the top 10 finishers at state.

Coach Rose was proud of Scheuerman and the hard work she has put in this season. "Last year she finished 13 at State and didn't have the season she would have liked. This season, though, she medaled in every tournament and is 14 strokes down from last year. She's worked hard on her short game and shows how determined she is to improve.

"Last week at conference she lost by 30 to Caliegh Essert (Torrington), then came back the next week to beat her at state. It shows you how strong she is and that she's been playing great golf," said coach Rose.

Coach Rose was also impressed with his other young golfers like Katelyn Shearer and Konnor Macy. "I was impressed with Kaitlyn Shearer," said coach Rose, "She shot a 56 on her front nine, in her first state tournament ever, and was her lowest nine of the year. On the day she shot 122 which tied a tournament low and to do that in a high pressure situation shows you what kind of competitor she is."

Rose added, "On the boys side, Konnor Macy shot 10 below his previous personal record and shot a 94 which put him in the top 20 as a freshman. He stayed focus, tried making bogeys and stuck to playing bogey golf which he did very well," said coach Rose.

Next fall season the Worland golf team will return each player which has coach Rose excited for his team's ceiling. "We're getting them all back and have the potential to add some eighth graders who will be freshman next season that bring tournament experience," said coach Rose. "On the boys side that played varsity, they were freshmen and sophomores. This season we moved up the boards dropping 20 strokes off. Jose Galarza is down 24 strokes James Velasquez is down 36 strokes, the kids are making progress and the sky's the limit. On the girls side we played four girls who this was their first fall of golf. They have the potential for growth and hungry to be better and I am excited to see what they can do."

"The thing we learned the most this season is our tournament scores were not indicative to our skill level and definitely not indicative of our commitment in practice. We have the potential to be a contender in the conference next season with the other teams seeing turnover while we get a year older. In the offseason we're going to work on being tournament ready rather than golf ready," said coach Rose.
