No. 2 Lady Warriors win 3-0 for season sweep of Lady Bobcats

October 12, 2016

THERMOPOLIS — The WyoPreps 3A No. 2 ranked Worland Lady Warriors (19-2) traveled down the road Tuesday night for a volleyball match against the Hot Springs County Lady Bobcats (10-12) and returned home with a 3-0 victory over HSCHS.

The win was the Lady Warriors seventh straight, who also defeated Torrington 3-0 Friday night and Wheatland 3-0 Saturday afternoon. The match was also Worland’s fourth straight without having dropped a single game.

“The girls continue their commitment to getting better every day,” said WHS coach Brittany Miller. “We still have a lot to work on and things we want to iron out in practice before the regional tournament but the girls have been working really hard.”

At the start of game one the Lady Warriors had a hard time shaking the determined Lady Bobcats as they led 10-7. Worland found their footing as the game wore on and outscored HSCHS 15-5 for the 25-12 win and went up one game to none.

Game two was much like game one, with the Lady Bobcats within swinging distance of the lead early but Worland was able to string together points in the mid and late points in the game to go up 2-0 after winning 25-15.

Wanting to force a game four the Lady Bobcats pushed the Lady Warriors in game three. Each time Worland went on a run HSCHS responded with a run of their own.

Down 17-7 in game three the Lady Bobcats went on a 6-1 run to cut the lead to five at 18-13. From there the Lady Warriors would not deliver a knockout punch but rather use their healthy lead to finish off the Lady Bobcats 25-18 and closeout the match 3-0.

“We didn’t have a normal pregame practice and actually have a tough grind out practice,” said coach Miller when asked about her team’s approach to the Lady Bobcats. “We set some goals for this week we don’t want to take anything too lightly and to play for someone other than themselves or for someone who can’t be there.”

Next for Worland they turn their attention to the visiting No. 4 ranked Buffalo Lady Bison for a Thursday night match at Worland Gymnasium 6 p.m. The important 3A East West Quadrant showdown will be the final home match of the season as well as the final home match for this year’s seniors.

“One of our goals this season was to earn the No. 1 seed at regionals. Buffalo is going to be a tough challenge but we’re going to work hard in practice (today) and we’re going to focus on leaving it all on the floor physically and mentally, we want to walk off that court with no regrets,” said coach Miller.

“Every group of seniors you lose is tough,” coach Millers said when asked about her senior class. “This group is special because they’re the first one I’ve had all four years. So we’re in denial and we’re not going to pay attention that they’re seniors until the season is over.”

A win against the Lady Bison will clinch the west quadrant outright for the Lady Warriors and secure a No. 1 seed for the 3A East Regional Tournament in Rawlins on Oct. 28 and 29.
