Warriors hang with 4A Sheridan in opening season dual

December 9, 2016

SHERIDAN - The Warrior wrestling team kicked off the Worland High school winter sports season in Sheridan with a dual against 4A Sheridan High School Thursday night and while they walked off the mat in defeat the Warriors went toe to toe with the Broncs making them work for the win.

"It went pretty well tonight, we ended up losing the dual but wrestled really well against a good Sheridan team. We were open in three weights so even before starting the dual we were giving up 18 points. It was good to see the kids come out like they did, this is definitely a dual I'd like to do again too when we're at full strength," said coach Josh Garcia.

Traveling to Sheridan the Warriors left three varsity wrestlers at home but even with the open spots Worland never backed down.

In his first WHS match freshman Daniel Weyrich at 120-pounds pinned his opponent. At 126-pounds, Buck Butterfield lost 9-7. Worland Warriors 132-pound Hayden Johnston, 138-pound Hunter Elliott, 170-pound Travis Tatkenhorst and 220-pound Alex Beck lost their respective matches. Warrior 145-pound Milo Vega pinned his opponent, as did 195-pound Quentin McBee, heavyweight Morgan Tigner, 182-pounder Isaac Goncalves and also in his first WHS match freshman 106-pounder Dominic Hartley.

Goncalves was down five points with 40 seconds remaining before he flipped the script on his opponent and earned the pin for the Warriors.

For the night coach Garcia was encouraged with his team's effort and results. "I'm extremely excited how we wrestled tonight. We won six matches and lost five, anytime you're on the side of that you're heading in the right direction. Our kids got the jitters out with that first match of the season. Tonight will be a huge momentum boost for us heading into the meet in Rapid City, S.D.," said coach Garcia.

Adding more on the night performance coach Garcia said, "Our team did an outstanding job tonight. We wrestled hard against Sheridan who is a powerhouse 4A school and is coming off a state football championship, which is always a morale booster for a school's other teams. You could feel walking into the gym tonight they felt they were going to come and run us over and our kids just battled from start to finish," said coach Garcia.

The Warriors varsity team travels to Rapid City, S.D., for a two-day meet starting today at 2 p.m. and wrapping up tomorrow. The junior varsity team is on the road for a meet in Powell with wrestling starting at noon today and continuing tomorrow.
