Firefighters respond to the Tongue Canyon Fire
March 21, 2017
SHERIDAN – Forest Service and Dayton Volunteer Fire Department firefighters responded to a reported wildfire in the Tongue River Canyon yesterday. The fire was reported by a hiker at about 3 p.m. Sunday.
The fire has burned about 30 acres in timber and grass on a dry, south slope about two miles west of the forest boundary along Forest Service Trail 002, the Tongue River Canyon Trail.
The human-caused fire will be investigated today as firefighters mop up in anticipation of rain showers this evening and tomorrow.
The Forest Service asks that people stay off Trail 002 until Wednesday morning, March 22, while the investigation is ongoing.
The Forest Service reminds everyone to be careful with campfires. Snow has melted from south-facing slopes and until green up occurs, last season’s dry grass is tinder for sparks from campfires or other burning material.
