Washakie County law enforcement stepping up traffic enforcement during the Sturgis Rally

August 2, 2017

WORLAND — Washakie County Law Enforcement will be out in force during the busy travel week of the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.

As part of a statewide enforcement campaign during the Rally, the Worland Police Department, Wyoming Highway Patrol, and the Washakie County Sheriff’s Office will be stepping up traffic enforcement from Aug. 4-13, according to a WHP press release.

“With the conclusion of the county fair and the increased traffic on (U.S.) Highway 16, to and from the Rally, it makes sense to increase traffic enforcement,” said Washakie County Sheriff Steve Rakness.

“We will be out specifically looking for traffic violations and impaired drivers,” said Chief Gabe Elliott of the Worland Police Department. “The purpose of traffic enforcement is to reduce crashes and save lives, and we will have zero tolerance for any driver who put others at risk.”

During Tuesday’s Worland City Council meeting, Elliott said the city does four to five special enforcement events throughout the year and usually conducts the events as an individual agency. This enforcement event, he said, is a combined effort. He said the timing is perfect because August is a high time of traffic for the county.

“We’ll be making sure everyone is safe and responsible,” he said.

The enforcement also coincides with Nowoodstock music festival in Ten Sleep Aug. 11-13

Washakie County Law Enforcement recommends these safe alternatives to drinking and driving.

•Plan a safe way home before the fun begins.

•Designate a sober driver.

•Download Drive Sober Wyoming app at http://www.wygcid.org/Smart_Phone_App.html

•If you see a drunk driver on the road, don’t hesitate to report it to 347-2242 or 347-4253.

• If you know someone is about to drive or ride after drinking, take the keys and help him/her make other arrangements to be safe.

Along with this enhanced enforcement effort, the Wyoming Highway Patrol is urging drivers to help keep Wyoming’s roadways safe by calling the Report Every Drunk Driver Immediately (REDDI) hotline number at 1-800-442-9090 to report suspected drunk drivers. Callers should be prepared to provide the dispatcher with a description of the vehicle, its location, and direction of travel.
