Middle school students treated to eclipse and science
August 22, 2017
WORLAND – At the ring of the bell, Worland Middle School students filed out their classes on Monday and amassed on the football field to witness a once-in-a-lifetime event, when clear Wyoming skies offered a near-perfect view of the 2017 solar eclipse.
Leading up to Monday's eclipse, science students learned the differences between solar and lunar eclipses, and worked on lab assignments dedicated to the effects of the eclipse, to better understand the event.
"We went over the safety rules for viewing [the eclipse] and did crafts to demonstrate the different stages," said Robert Woffinden, seventh-grade science teacher.
While the students looked to the sky during the eclipse, safe behind glasses provided by the school district, Woffinden pointed out satellites and stars not usually seen during daytime hours.
After the eclipse, the teacher explained that the students will now develop PowerPoint presentations based on what they saw and learned, and continue with lab assignments to measure the effect of shade on temperature.
