South Dakota team wins local BBQ contest

WORLAND - B-S BBQ Outlaws out of Hill City, South Dakota, won the grand championship for the 13th annual Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship competition Saturday.
Bob Stanfiel said he began dabbling in competitive barbecue competitions in 2014, starting the Hill City Wine, Brew and BBQ, which is this weekend. "I started dabbling in 2014 but last year we went hard core to see what we could do and this year this is our 20th event," he said.
B-S BBQ Outlaws was the top team among 28 teams at this year's competition.
Stanfiel said he loves to cook all of the competitive meats - chicken (third place), ribs (fifth), pork (fourth place), brisket (fifth). He said the mystery meat this year, oxtail, "was hilarious and fun" to cook. B-S BBQ Outlaws were eighth in the mystery meat, among 15 competitors and ninth in sauce among 16 competitors.
The reserve champion this year was Smokin Hot Butts BBQ out of Casper, who was also the People's Choice winners and were the Wyoming high point overall winners.
Locally, winning the Jim Blake Memorial Award was Rolling Hogs and Larry Hill of Worland. Jim Blake was the founder of the Pepsi Wyoming State Championship BBQ competition. Rolling Hogs also took second in the mystery meat category.

Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival committee president Dave Paxton said this year's festival and competition went well. "It was a great event."
He said while they don't have an official count he believes the crowds Friday and Saturday were as large or larger as the previous 12.
He said as a sanctioned Kansas City Barbecue Society event, the Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship scored well in the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association Cup Challenge. Paxton said he hopes that means they could earn their third award for Event of the Year.
The Pepsi Wyoming State BBQ Championship and Bluegrass Festival, held the third weekend in August since 2004, has won the Rocky Mountain BBQ Association Organizers Cup Challenge and Event of the Year in 2015 and 2013.
