An expensive test: Large fine for shoplifting pregnancy test
December 16, 2017
WORLAND – A Worland man was handed more than $200 in fines and fees on Tuesday, after pleading guilty to stealing a $15 pregnancy test.
The case stems from March 18, when Kershawn James of Worland was charged with shoplifting a pregnancy test from Blair’s Market in Worland.
Confronted with the store’s surveillance tape as evidence, James denied his role in the theft, and initially pleaded not guilty to the misdemeanor. Subsequently, the case was held over for a six-man circuit court jury trial, scheduled for Tuesday.
After a jury had been called and court scheduled, James reached a plea agreement to plead guilty before the trial could convene. Judge Tom Harrington issued sentencing the same day.
James was sentenced to six months unsupervised probation, a suspended sentence of 15 days in jail, and $220.99 in fines, including the public defender and court fees.
James was also ordered to pay Blair’s $30.94 in restitution.
