BASIN — The Riverside Academic Challenge team is coming off a busy week of competition.

On Feb. 17 the team got up early and drove to Torrington to compete at Eastern Wyoming Community College in the last of the regular season meets.

The two teams made up of juniors Matt Gesch, Adelle Stone and James DesRosier along with the freshman team of Haily Rivers, Skylar Tharp and Roger DesRosier did well with the freshman team coming in sixth and the juniors coming in third behind Evanston and Cheyenne East high schools. This cinched the third place and the small schools title for the Riverside Rebels, according to Coach Stuart DesRosier.

“With the small school champion for that meet it sews up a season run of placing in the top three spots of every meet held as well as winning the small school championship for the entire season,” DesRosier said.

On Wednesday, Feb. 21, the team drove to Billings to compete in the Yellowstone Academic Tournament. This tournament, hosted by Skyview High School, is a huge meet with competitors from across the state of Montana and the teams from Greybull and Basin. Many of the larger schools in Montana sent multiple teams to compete in either of the two divisions with approximately 53 teams present, DesRosier said.

Riverside fielded two teams in the silver division; the juniors Adelle Stone and James DesRosier along with the feisty freshmen Emily and Sam Crouse, Hailey Rivers and Roger DesRosier. At the end of the seven rounds of competition the two-person junior team left with the trophy marking the first time the traveling trophy has left the state of Montana. The freshman team finished with a respectable sixth place in the silver division.

The next match scheduled is the all stars competition on March 17. This is an invitational meet for selected players who have been rated in the top 15 of academic competitors as determined by coaches points throughout the year. From these 15, five players and an alternate will be chosen to compete against Montana in June.

The Riverside players expected to be invited are James DesRosier, Adelle Stone and Roger DesRosier.
