WORLAND - The show must go on. Snow is forecasted to fall today during the start of the Pinnacle Challenger's Cup. The best 3A and 4A girls soccer have to offer will battle it out to see who is left standing over the course of the two-day, 14-team tournament.

Matches for the tournament will be played at Worland High School on the east and west fields, Worland Middle School and the Worland Community Center Complex. Also, matches will consist of two 30-minute halves, no overtime with all ties going directly to a shootout.

The No. 5 Lady Warriors open the tournament against Pinedale at 1 p.m. at Worland High School, and considering their last outing was a 5-0 defeat to 3A Northwest rival Powell on March 27, shoring up their offense and defense will be priorities for this tournament.

"We worked on defensive transitions and swinging the ball. We watched some film to better understand where each player needs to be on the field," said WHS girls soccer coach Danielle Warren on some of the things her team worked on during practice.

The Lady Warriors sit at 1-2 on the season and have a goal differential of -3. Their first-round opponent Pinedale, who has not scored a goal this season, is 0-4 with a -15 goal differential.

"I've always been impressed with their positive attitudes; they definitely work as a team. While they might not score a lot or win games, they work hard. They overload defensively and if they can sneak in a goal, they will. That's where it's really important that we play our positions and not getting sucked into what Pinedale is doing," said Warren.

All five ranked 3A girls teams will be in Worland this weekend. No. 1 Cody, No. 4 Douglas and No. 5 Worland are on the same side of the bracket. No. 2 Star Valley and No. 3 Powell share the same side of the bracket with 4A's No. 3-ranked Rock Springs.

"My hope is that the girls realize how good they can be. We have so much talent and possibility and they haven't tapped into that just yet. Our mantra after we played Powell was sometimes you learn more in defeat than you learn when you win. When times are at their hardest that's when you grow the most. This tournament is going to be hard with potentially four games in two days. It's going to show who is going to step-up and who will be a leader," said Warren.

WARRIORS

The No. 2-ranked Warriors receive a first-round bye and advance to the quarterfinals of the Southwest Invitational tournament. There they will await the winner of the 3A Rawlins vs. 4A Evanston for a 3 p.m contest today.

The Warriors, 4-0, have started the season by making a lot of noise. In their first three matches against Riverton, Lander and Cody, they allowed zero goals and scored six of their own. But it was in their last match against Powell that showed how high of a ceiling this team has.

The Panthers were the first team to score on the Warriors and did so twice, but Worland had 11 of their own and scored the match's first seven goals.

Worland's strong start has given them the second best goal differential in 3A at plus 15.

If the Warriors can navigate through the tough field of teams, which includes every ranked 3A team (No. 1 Star Valley, No. 3 Torrington, No. 4 Buffalo and No. 5 Cody) along with 4A No. 2-ranked Rock Springs, it will show that their fast start was no fluke and make then a heavy-favorite to return from Jackson (the site of the 3A State tournament) with championship hardware.
