Hear me out...Column sampler

April 28, 2018

Usually, when I can't think of a topic for the week's column, I bust out the column buffet where I touch on a few topics going on in the world of sports. But I'm going to be honest, this week there weren't enough topics that really caught my interest.

Instead, I'm busting out the first column sampler, not as satisfying as the column buffet but just as entertaining. Just like the sampling circuit at Costco, a bit random like how they have a Listerine station from time to time or the fruit stations where some poor soul has to slice flathead cherries.

Let's get to it!

NFL DRAFT GRADES

I get the need for mock drafts, it's fun to speculate where certain players will fall or who America's Team, the Jacksonville Jaguars, will add to their budding dynasty. It gives a general idea of who the draft will play out and creates a built-in excitement when teams trade up or select a player outside the mock draft consensus.

But what doesn't make sense is the need to grade each pick or draft class for every team. Breaking down the draft class or picks is fine but giving out grades is dumb and essentially setting yourself up to be mocked on social media for eternity.

Here's an example why you shouldn't hand out draft grades, Matt Miller of Bleacher Reports gave the Seattle Seahawks a D for their 2012 draft and the Cleveland Browns a B for theirs. Here were the Seahawks first three picks, Bruce Irvin, Bobby Wagner and Russell Wilson; here are the Browns first three, Trent Richardson, Brandon Weeden and Mitchell Schwartz.

The Seahawks took three All-Pros and the Browns, well, they continued their illustrious streak of whiffing.

Whoever started the idea of draft grades is a first-ballot Hall of Famer in "Bad Ideas Sports Hall of Fame." They'd join the person that thought of having in-game or halftime interviews, moving professional basketball out of Seattle and NFL games in London.

Speaking of the NFL and London...

JAGS OWNER SHAHID KHAN BUYS FA STADIUM

Thursday morning it broke that America's favorite owner of America's favorite team, Shahid Khan was going to buy Wembley Stadium in London, England.

As a Jags fan, my first thought was that is a smart move. The NFL wants more London games and if Khan owns the building that's more money for him to spend on the franchise.

However, the national sports media took it as a sign the Jags were relocating across the pond. I'm not going to make fun of these men and women or claim fake news (I'm not sure which is more annoying fake news or dilly dilly, both are like nails on a chalkboard for me.) for jumping to a wrong but reasonable conclusion. Franchises relocating are a big sports story that has legs for years, so it makes sense. And not long ago some in the NFL wanted the Jags to move to Los Angeles, so it's a logical conclusion to make.

Khan has always been upfront about keeping the Jags in Jacksonville and has even started making plans to bolster the city's downtown area. It wouldn't make much sense to pour money into a downtown project only to pick up and leave in a few years.

THE NBA PLAYOFFS HAVE BEEN A LOT OF FUN

These NBA playoffs have been tremendous. The West has had a sweep and two series ended in five, but even though they ended early they were entertaining. The Pelicans destroyed the Blazers in an exciting fashion, the Timberwolves threw some haymakers at the Rockets and the Warriors/Spurs...well, maybe this series wasn't entertaining.

There was a cool moment from the Warriors/Spurs series when Gregg Popovich's wife, Erin, passed away the whole league was there for Pop. I believe that is unique to the NBA, they're all competitors, but there is a strong bond between all those involved in the league. It's something you don't see much in any other professional sport.

On the East side of things, Philly is the only to team that's looked dominant. They ran through a Miami team that was pretty good, and they'll probably sweep or go five with either Boston or Milwaukee. The Eastern Conference championship is a real possibility.

It is funny that the Colangelo's are given way too much credit for Philly's success. Say what you will about former Sixers GM Sam Hinkie but his fingerprints are all over this team. Yes, he tanked and kept trading to acquire assets in the hopes of landing a top player or drafting one. It was embarrassing at times for the NBA and I'm sure infuriating for Sixers fans, but it worked. He got them Joel Embiid, Dario Saric, Robert Covington and Ben Simmons. He hired coach Brett Brown and trusted him to develop the players through those tough years.

Hinkie was pushed out by basketball of operations chairman Jerry Colangelo, who brought in his son Bryan, to be the GM. Bryan Colangelo has made a couple of nice moves, signing JJ Redick and drafting Markelle Fultz, but the bulk of this roster was put in place by Hinkie.

The Colangelo's will receive too much praise if the Sixers win the East, while Hinkie will be lucky to receive a shout-out, but them are the breaks in the cutthroat business of the NBA.

Something to keep an eye on with the Sixers in the future, while the media and some fans will heap praises on Bryan Colangelo, I'm not sure how many NBA GM's have much respect for him. (If you believe some of the NBA rumors) They know who built that team and the means by which Colangelo got the job. So if in the next two to three seasons Colangelo pulls some wild or head-scratching moves, it's going to be because he's trying to put his fingerprint and prove it's his team.

THE MOST POLARIZING QB IN THE DRAFT WAS JOSH ALLEN

Leading up to the draft I thought Lamar Jackson was going to be the most polarizing QB taken of the Big 5; Jackson, Josh Rosen, Josh Allen, Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. But when the Bills traded up to take Allen, the reaction from the ESPN analysts and on Twitter was either all-in on or convinced he was a bust.

If a QB doesn't come from a big school and didn't lead UW to the College Football Playoffs, no one knows what to make of them. That's what happened with Allen.

Allen is going to be just fine in Buffalo and barring injury, is going to be among the best QBs of his draft class.

THE NFL DRAFT TRADITION OF BOOING ROGER GOODELL

An underrated sports tradition is when the boo-birds come for NFL commish Roger Goodell. It is music to my ears when Goodell steps out for each pick and the boos rain down from the stands.

They used to be stronger when the draft was in New York and I swear that's part of the reason why the NFL started moving the draft around the league. The owners wanted to help out Goodell with the boos because it looks like each boo cuts him to his soul.

I do have to tip my hat to Goodell. When the Broncos were up to pick at No. 5, he had a St. Jude Children's Research Hospital patient Austin Denton announce the pick. When Goodell stepped out on the stage, the boos started but as soon as the crowd saw Denton, they stopped immediately.

SPORTS AVENGERS

"Avengers: Infinity War" drops this weekend, and yes I've already watched it and it is awesome, best of the Marvel movies.

As I was waiting for the post-credit scene, I had the idea of what a sports Avengers team would look like using current athletes.

Hawkeye is Aaron Rodgers: No-brainer, both are insanely accurate.

Iron Man is LeBron James: Both crazy talented leaders but tend to drive people mad after a while.

Black Panther is Giannis Antetokounmpo: Instant fan-favorites who have very little haters.

Captain America is Mike Trout: On the surface seem boring but are the heart and soul of the group.

Hulk is Von Miller: When they're on, nobody is taking them down.

Black Widow is Serena Williams: Are quietly the most dominant, and so much so that you wonder if they might be the best of the entire group.

Vision is Sidney Crosby: Supreme talent but always seems to be hurt or something holding them back.

Thor is Tom Brady: Boring to start but lately became an interesting character.

Scarlet Witch is Katie Ledecky: Absurdly powerful and, scarily, haven't reached their full potential.
