GREYBULL — Bighorn National Forest firefighters responded to a wildfire in the Cloud Peak Wilderness on Aug. 24.

A 1/8-acre fire, likely caused by lightning was located ¼-mile east of Granite Lake in the Paint Rock Creek drainage. The fire had burned almost all the available fuels in the area, was smoldering and was surrounded by rock, according to a press release issued Saturday night by the Bighorn National Forest Office in Sheridan. The fire is adjacent to the hiking trail in this location – Trail #038.

Due to the wilderness values, which emphasize natural conditions and ecological processes, no fire-line was constructed.

It is not anticipated that this fire will grow any larger, however, wilderness managers urge backcountry travelers to use caution in the area for any burned trees that could fall, or any escalating fire behavior.

No trails are closed at this time. Managers will continue to monitor the fire. This was originally reported by backcountry recreationists, and it is appreciated that this was information was reported, and for any future observations made by the public.
