64th annual Hobby Day is Saturday

WORLAND – The 64th Washakie County Homemakers Hobby Day is Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Washakie County Fairgrounds located at 501 15 Mile Road in Worland.
Hobby Day is a craft fair with a twist. There will not be any commercial items for sale at the event. “We have about 45 tables and all items for sale are handcrafted items,” Washakie County Homemaker Bonnies Schreibeis said.
This year’s Hobby Day will have crafters from as far away as Colorado and Montana to local crafters and everywhere in between.
Handcrafted items for sale will range from crochet items to jewelry to baked goods to quilts. Hobby Day vendor Sue Page said that she has been a vendor at Hobby Day for over 10 years and will be selling sewn items such as aprons and quilts. She added that the Washakie County Homemakers are a nice group of people and that she enjoys Hobby Day because it gives her a chance to see people that she doesn’t normally get to see on a day-to-day basis.
Hobby Day vendor Laura Brown stated that she and her husband Steve have been vendors at Hobby Day for 14 years and sell handmade wooden products. “We sell ornaments, wall hangings and other wooden items to sit on desks. All of our items are hand cut on a scroll saw. Both Steve and I do the work. We got started when we made some wooden items for our yard for Christmas. We enjoyed working with the wood and it just morphed from there into making things not just for ourselves but to sell as well. It is something the two of us both really enjoy and it is relaxing for us,” Brown said. “Hobby Day was one of the first craft shows we participated in. It is always well run, has good a turnout and we appreciate the fact that all items for sale there are handmade,” she added.
Hobby Day originated 64 years ago as a day where homemakers gave demonstrations instead of selling their items. It eventually changed into a sale. “Hobby Day is our big deal of the year. It’s our one way of making money. Hobby Day started way back and it was just the homemakers demonstrating things. We didn’t have crafters coming in we just demonstrated, but that was our hobby day. Then someplace along the way they started asking vendors to come in. It was big when they were in the old community hall, it was a big deal but since it’s been out at the fairgrounds it has grown,” Schreibeis said.
