Washakie County 4-H and Chief Washakie FFA member Elizabeth Voss enters the sale arena with auctioneers Adam Redland and Gary Nash during the Washakie County Fair Junior Livestock Sale Saturday, Aug. 3, in Worland.

WORLAND - Area businesses showed their generosity for Washakie County youth at the Washakie County Fair Junior Livestock Sale Aug. 3, purchasing 83 animals for $176,041.47.

Washakie County 4-H Extension Educator Amber Armajo said the sale amount includes $12,201 from add-ons, where companies support youth by designating an amount to add on to an animal's final sale price.

Armajo said the sale amount was about $21,000 higher than last year with 15 fewer animals sold.

There were 83 animals sold at the livestock sale. The average price for sheep was $6.46 per pound; swine $5.58 per pound, beef $4.66, goats $6.67 and poultry (one turkey) $350.

Armajo said the average price per animal was up from last year, except goats, which was down by 33 cents per pound.

"This just shows great community support," Armajo said.

Armajo noted that this instead of just one day set aside for Washakie County exhibitors to go visit area businesses to invite them to attend the livestock sale, they provided a full week for exhibitors to visit businesses.

Each animal exhibitor were each assigned five businesses. If they visited all five then the commission from their sale of the animal is reduced from 6% to 3%, Armajo said.

The commission goes to the Junior Livestock Sale Committee for promotion of the sale, the buyers luncheon and for operation of the sale.
