Worland City Council gives OK to Maverik adult Chillers

August 22, 2019

WORLAND — With proper packaging and sealed bags, the Worland City Council gave unanimous consent for the Worland Maverik store to offer adult alcoholic Chillers.

Dan Post, store director, came to the council last month requesting permission to offer the alcoholic drinks in the Worland store. He came back to the council Tuesday to address some concerns that were brought up at the previous meeting.

He said, “No alcoholic beverage will leave my store as an open container.”

He said when a customer comes in they will wait at the dispensing area until a Maverik employee can wait on them. They will ask for ID and then get their order. The cup will have a heat sealed lid on it and then a bag placed around it and sealed. Then the purchase will be made at the register where the customer will again show proper ID for the purchase.

He said the photos of the cups shown to the council last month were generic for the test store in Evanston. The actual cups will be designed in such a way that they will not be confused with other Maverik cups and will be clearly marked as an alcoholic beverage.

He said the design will help law enforcement as well as parents to know which Maverik cups have alcohol.

Regarding the alcohol that will be served, Post said it depends on the recipe and there will be different recipes. He said the recipes could include “top shelf” wine or liquor.

The actual alcohol content will vary by recipe and type of alcohol. He said they mix 750 milliliters of wine or liquor with 828 milliliters of water to arrive at 5.5% ABV (alcohol by volume) or 4.35% ABW (alcohol by weight).

Worland Police Chief Gabe Elliott said he met with Post last week and “ironed out” a lot of the issues. He said as long as what Post outlined is followed he is “totally comfortable.”

“They are leaving the store with a sealed container. There is no ifs, ands, or buts, whether it’s an open container or not at that point. The cup’s going to be visible to everyone as far as an alcoholic beverage. They’ve done a good job of thinking this through. I would recommend it at this point.”

The council approved the proposal on the condition that Post bring the newly designed package to the council for final approval.

Post said once approval is given, Maverik will begin working on construction of the dispensing area at the Worland store.

He said Maverik is waiting to get a certain number of stores approved for the sale before ordering the cups and equipment.

OTHER BUSINESS

In other business at Tuesday’s council meeting:

•Airport Manager Lynn Murdoch reported that the airport would be shut down on Sept. 12 for a few days for pavement painting.

•Elliott reported he has hired a new officer.

He also reported that the first day of school went well. He said two school lights did not come on automatically but were turned on manually and fixed by noon.
