BLM Wyoming announces 2020 wild horse adoption events in Rock Springs

Fifteenmile horses among those to be adopted

January 9, 2020

ROCK SPRINGS – The Bureau of Land Management (BLM) announces the first wild horse adoption events of 2020 in Wyoming. The events are scheduled for January 17-18, March 13-14 and April 24-25 at the Rock Springs Wild Horse Holding Facility.

Gates will open at 9 a.m., load out begins at 1 p.m. and gates will close at 3:30 p.m. A selection of 40 horses recently gathered from the Fifteenmile Herd Management Area (HMA) will be available for adoption at each event.

There were 607 ultimately gathered during the Fifteenmile HMA gather operation Oct. 18-25 with some returned back to the management area, some headed to the honor farm and 493 settling in at the holding facility.

The horses presented during the adoption event are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Anyone wishing to adopt a wild horse must fill out an application, conform to the BLM's adoption requirements and have their application approved by the BLM. Staff specialists will be available to answer questions and assist with the adoption applications.

There is a $25 adoption/sale fee for untrained animals. Adopters can qualify for up $1,00 through the Adoption Incentive Program.

BLM Rock Springs Office Public Affairs Specialist Nikki Maxwell explained, "The National Wild Horse & Burro Program launched a new Adoption Incentive Program (AIP) March 12, 2019. The WH&B Program offers untrained horses for $25 each. The incentive for the adopter is to receive $1,000 per horse from the BLM. The Rock Springs WH&B Facility Adoptions in March and April 2019 offered 60 mixed horses (at each event) which were gathered from Green Mountain and Stewart Creek Herd areas in 2018. We successfully adopted out a total of 29 horses (26 through the new AIP). There is a great amount of public interest with the new AIP to adopt untrained horses."

The $1,000 are divided into $500 payments, $500 within 60 days of adoption of an untrained wild horse and burro and $500 within 60 days of titling the animal.

During actual adoption events, Maxwell said adopters range from those who are previous owners or adopters to those who have never had horses or seen horses up close. "Not everyone goes home with a horse," Maxwell said, but added that the people who attend the adoptions have a love and appreciation for wild horses.
