February 10, 2022

CASPER - The Northern Wyoming News earned the Small Weekly Editorial Leadership Cup at the Wyoming Press Association winter convention in Casper on Saturday.

Judging the editorial excellence award was by the winners of the NNA's Better Newspaper Contest editorial writing awards.

Editorials are judged on literary excellence, insight, scope, suitability and timeliness.

A newspaper can submit between five to 10 editorials. The Northern Wyoming News submitted eight editorials all written by editor/manager Karla Pomeroy. Topics covered freedom, community response to Lt. Ray Krogman's remains coming, election, shopping local, suicide prevention and substance abuse awareness and recovery.

Content submitted is from Nov. 1, 2020, to Oct. 31, 2021.

Staff members also won top honors at the Wyoming Press Association convention.

Pomeroy and Production Manager Jane Elliott earned first place for the "Why I Mask Up" advertising campaign in the plus business advertising category. The Northern Wyoming News teamed up with Washakie Medical Center for the campaign that featured individuals, family and Santa and Mrs. Claus saying why they mask up.

The campaign was started prior to any mandates in Wyoming or Washakie County but concluded at the end of 2020, when a mask mandate was in place.

Judges wrote, "Clever way to promote masking up. Great cooperation between healthcare system and newspaper."

In photography two former staffers earned first-place honors. Summer intern Avery Howe took first place in general news photo with her photo of a law enforcement officer saluting during Lt. Ray Krogman's service. She also took a second place for her photo of Krogman's remains at the Billings International Airport.

Former staff writer Seth Romsa took first place in portrait/personality with his photo of Washakie County 4-H Reserve Champion Junior Poultry Showman Ryder Haun during the Washakie County Fair.

Sports editor Alex Kuhn took second place in sports column writing for his "Hear Me Out" column. Columnists must submit columns within a three-month timeframe.

The judge wrote, "I rated your entry as second place because I liked the depth but I felt the columns were too long."

The Small Weekly Division is the largest of three divisions with 27 newspapers. There are eight in the Large Weekly Division and five in the Daily Division.
