Washakie County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day this Saturday

WORLAND – Eight agencies, working together as the Washakie County R3 (reduce, reuse and recycle) Coalition are sponsoring a Washakie County Household Hazardous Waste Collection Day on May 14 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Washakie County Landfill.
Washakie County Weed and Pest, Washakie County Conservation District, Washakie County Solid Waste Disposal District No. 1, Washakie County Emergency Management, Worland Fire Protection District No. 1, Washakie County Sheriff’s Office, City of Worland, Cody Regional Health and Washakie County Public Health are involved with the coalition.
The funding for the event comes from Washakie County Weed and Pest, Washakie County Conservation District and Washakie County Solid Waste Disposal District No. 1 at a cost of over $30,000. Washakie County Weed and Pest Supervisor Jarrod Glanz said the cost for the event comes from quotes from companies who will be taking the hazardous waste away.
Glanz said the coalition has been holding this event since 1992, but have not had one since 2018 due to the pandemic.
“The coalition came up with a way to keep things out of the landfill,” Glanz said. “It’s an easy way to get rid of things.”
Glanz said they are still looking for volunteers, and that if anyone wants to volunteer they can show up to the safety meeting at the landfill at 8 a.m. before the collection day starts.
At the hazard waste collection day in 2018, record numbers were reached. According to Glanz, there were 310 vehicles that showed up.
“Since we haven’t done it in four years, I’m expecting at least 400 vehicles,” he said.
Glanz added that this is not a quick process and asks people to be patient and stay in their vehicles.
He also said that this year, they have started charging for freon devices, such as freezers or refrigerators, which they haven’t done in the past. Another thing they have started this year is limiting the amount of motor oil someone can bring with a limit of 25 gallons.
Anyone wanting to bring more than 25 gallons of motor oil, is asked to contact Weed and Pest and arrange for that commercial quantity.
Items accepted on Saturday for free include paint and varnishes, household cleaning products, turpentine, pesticides, roofing tar, bleach and ammonia products, corrosive cleaners, photographic chemicals, anit-freeze, transmission and brake fluid, poison baits and moth balls, fluorescent bulbs, non-freon appliances, electronics, batteries and prescription medications.
