Lorraine Anne August, affectionately known as Lory, 62, passed away with her loving family surrounding her at home in Worland, Wyoming on Saturday, July 16, 2022, after a 5-year courageous battle with metastatic breast cancer. Her niece battled the same cancer for part of Lory's journey with her.
Lory was born in Rock Springs, Wyoming to Raymond Lorraine and Rozine (Bersche) Black on November 11, 1959. She spent her childhood with her brothers and playing with the neighborhood kids. They took many trips to their family cabin in Pinedale, Wyoming. Lory attended Roosevelt Elementary and Yellowstone Elementary schools growing up. She then attended East Junior High School in Rock Springs, Wyoming. Lory graduated from the Wyoming Girls' School and received her GED, carrying on to Western Wyoming Community College for a few years to study as a beautician. She also played sports in college.
She married Danny Thomas August on March 24, 1979, in Worland, Wyoming. They welcomed three children into their lives, Danny II, JohnRay, and Shealynn. Her kids were her world, and she was the mom of all moms. She gave with no end, loved unconditionally, created an atmosphere of acceptance, and poured herself into her family. To Lory, family was everything and she had a family gathering for every holiday and birthday. She took great pride in serving people her infamous treats, cakes and gathering around a table to share a meal. Her love language was food, and she was an amazing cook.
Lory was the person who never judged anyone, loved all generously, and always welcomed you into her arms and their home. Her policy with their home was if you visited more than once – you're not just a guest anymore, you're family. She was a jokester and was well known for the funny words she made up along her journey like "farmery roads".
As life went on, Lory loved to adventure, always having a fun time. It was not unusual to find her, family, and friends having a water balloon fight in the park. She continued the tradition of traveling to Pinedale every summer to the family cabin with all her family. She loved camping, being outdoors, decorating her house, crafting, sitting outside, bowling, playing softball, gardening, visiting with others, spending time with her grandkids, had a huge heart, and was an encourager of anyone who needed it. She always made you feel welcome, and you felt like you were special to her. Lory's life was her grandkids, and she was always found pouring out every ounce of her love onto them. She was the best Nana ever.
Lory's career consisted of 14 years at Antone's Supper Club early on. She then went on to open Coffee & Cakes (open for 4 years) with her sister-in-law Sandie and become a professional cake decorator for over 40 years. After closing their cake shop, she worked at Pamida until it became Shopko for nearly 10 years. She then retired later in life from RMA where she worked for 10 years. Lory was well known for her work as an Eagle member for 44 years. She orchestrated many charities, and sat in different offices and chairs anywhere from President to Secretary (23 years). She was the head of the ritual team and became Madam State President (2002) as well as Mountain Regional President (2021). She was a volunteer for 4-H as a cake decorating leader and a Youth Leader at the United Methodist Church. She loved teaching people new things.
Lory will always be remembered as a bright and beautiful woman, full of joy and never complaining. She truly amazed us all during her cancer battle because she embraced the journey and always had sayings she stood by, "It's green in Italy" and "It will all work out". In her last days, she reassured her family and friends that God had a plan for her. Lory touched every life she encountered, and she will be dearly missed by all. Lory was the best Daughter, Sister, Wife, Mother, Aunt, Friend, Nana, "Anut" and Coworker. She passed on a legacy of the importance of tradition to her children, husband, and grandkids. As a Christian, who loved to learn and talk about God, we know she is now home with the Lord – whole, healed, and truly at peace.
She is preceded in death by her parents and stepsister, Sheila Damm.
Survivors include her loving husband, Danny T. August; sons, Danny II and JohnRay both of Sheridan; daughter, Shealynn of Baton Rouge, Louisiana; grandchildren: Bryce, Landon, Brooklynn, and AnnaLee; stepmother, Shirley Black of Rock Springs; brothers: James "JC" Carl (Kathy) Black of Topsham, Maine; Denis (Lynnette) Black of Merritt Island, Florida; Ray Paul (MaryBeth) Black of Worland; step-siblings: Cathy Flansburg of Rock Springs, Bill (Beverly) Miller of Rock Springs, Shelly Hunter of Oregon and Tobi (J.L.) Guthrie of Worland.
A private family visitation has taken place. Memorial Services will be held Thursday, July 21, 2022, at the United Methodist Church with Pastor Scott Townsend officiating.
